Alley Cat Allies is America’s primary advocate for strays and ferals. They’ve been a tremendous help to us, and to similar groups in other communities. They assist in working with municipal governments to discourage or overturn feeding bans and develop feral rescue programs. CATsnip gives them a high-paw!

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) does wonderful things to help animals, but we disagree with their position on feral and stray cats. PETA maintains that allowing cats to live in the wild is cruel, and the kindest alternative is euthanization. On their website, citing outdated source material from 2002 and earlier, they explain:
“Because of the huge number of feral cats and the severe shortage of good homes, the difficulty of socialization, and the dangers lurking where most feral cats live, it may be necessary—and the most compassionate choice—to euthanize feral cats…A painless injection is far kinder than any fate that feral cats will meet if they are left to survive on their own.”

Obviously, we disagree, and believe feral cats can live happy, healthy lives in colonies if sterilized and provided with adequate shelter, food, and medical attention when necessary. Still, we highly recommend PETA as a go-to source for almost all animal issues.

The Humane Society of Jefferson County (HSJC) is a small privately run non-profit shelter that has been in operation since 1922. More than 1,500 animals pass through the shelter annually. They are literally a lifesaver for our county’s animals.

I can has cheezeburger? is a hoot! You can lose hours scrolling through photos and videos of surly, misbehaving, naughty kittehs sent in and captioned by their humans who know exactly what the cats are saying and thinking. This site has virtually nothing to do with spaying and neutering, and everything to do with dumping you off your chair and onto the floor in helpless fits of laughter.
